The 1861 Census recorded Richard at Jenkins Town River Sherbro, Sierra Leone as an Able Seaman aboard HMS Falcon cruising for the suppression of the Slave Trade between Cape St Ann and Cape Palmas.
Later news of his Naval career is found in the "Thames Star" New Zealand, 27 May 1902 under the head "Our Veterans"
"In connection with the application for new ribbons for medals held by the veterans of Thames, to which the details have been forwarded to His Excellency the Governor, the following applications have been dispatched to the Earl of Ranfurly.
........... Richard Taylor, Thames, HMS Eclipse (Capt Morgan), 8 years' service. Holds NZ War Medal."
