250 Caution should be exercised in accepting the veracity of my research relating to John CRUMPLER (spelt CRUMPLEHER in earlier baptism records), born circa 1645, Winterborne Kingston, Dorset, England.
Challenges include spaces in Almer Parish Baptism Records, February 1641 ? April 1663, Marriages September 1640 ? April 1654, Burials 1640 ? 1659 with numerous blank and cut out pages for other years. Further, the Winterborne Kingston registers only began in 1598 and are imperfect between 1599 and 1613 and between 1675 and 1696.
This has required a strategy using logic in an attempt to determine a number of event dates and relationships.
Using the Muster Rolls started in the reign of Henry VIII (1509 -1547) a Crumpler presence in Almer and Kingston can be established from the following:
1539 Muster
Thomas CRUMPLERE , Able archer, with a whole harness, living in the Come Almer Tithing
William CRUMPLERE, Ale archer, with a whole harness, living in the Come Almer Tithing
1569 Muster
Thomas CROMPELHEARE, Billman, living in the Kynston Tithing, in the Bere Regis Hundred
Researching back from my 2 x Great Grandmother, Annie Hannah CRUMPLER we find this line, resident in the Almer, Mapperton and Winterborne Kingston area.
The other major impediment is the paucity, or perhaps put more correctly, the absence of credible sourced data for dates prior to around 1650 for this family. This has required a "clean slate" approach to my research and obviously has resulted in conflicts with the many myths and family lore that one is able to access online. Mind you, there are valid reasons in a number of cases for oral history to have been relied on as the base, and this is no more evident than the case of Capt. William Stacy CRUMPLER I who settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, USA late in the 1600s. I shall be tackling this separately. "Family History without sources is Mythology".
In another move to neutralise the myth phenomenon I have used historical records only.
I deal here with John Crumpler, born about 1645, died 1723, Winterborne Kingston, Dorset, England and explain my logic in coming to conclusions in the absence of sourced historical records data.
1. Key documents used as a platform for the investigation were:
a) John Crumpler's Will dated 19 August 1723,
b) Nicholas Crumpler's Will dated 7 May 1745.
Both Wills are prime sources for conclusively identifying immediate family members, forebears and descendants
2. Nicholas's Will names John's wife, Christian, from which a number of conclusions may be confidently drawn, including those in relation to the "mysteries/myths" surrounding the USA immigrant, William Stacy CRUMPLER.
3. John CRUMPLEHER who married his second wife Julian SQUIBBE in 1639 can be eliminated as being in my direct family line. In fact he can also be eliminated as the father of William Stacy CRUMPLER. This is based simply on the fact that there were no living issue of this marriage. The only issue that can be identified is a burial entry in the Winterborne Kingston parish register, 31 May 1641, which I read as ? A dead borne ..... of John & Julian Crumpliere?.
4. Logic would hold that calculating a birth date for John, using time frames of 20 -30 years each side would justify somewhere in the vicinity of 1645, on the basis of his family with birthdates spanning 1676-1687. 1645 of course places us in the period of the missing Almer records and there are no related Winterborne Kingston entries.
5. Applying the same logic suggests John's father was John CRUMPLEHER christened 16 June 1621, Winterborne Kingston, son of John CRUMPLEHER and his first wife Margarett, other issue being Anne, born 1616 and Margarett, born 1618.
6. I have noted this chapter of my research for regular review as more historical records are digitised and would, of course, welcome other suggestions for refinement of my conclusions.

Crumpler, John (I2235)
